As many of you know, Write In Color is a big fan of vocabulary.  Big.  So, I was very disturbed to find out that hundreds of poor, harmless, defenseless words are getting dropped from our language on a yearly basis.  Even though there are hundreds of thousands of words in our lexicon, 90% of everything we write is communicated through 7,000 measly overused words. So, in honor of expanding our vocabularies and reclaiming the words that are about to be thrown into vocab purgatory, Write In Color is becoming a member of  www.savethewords.org.

Save The Words asks us to adopt a word in peril by making a vow to use it as much as possible.  The hope is that if we start using these words, they can be reintroduced into our language rather than being booted from Websters Dictionary.  Just think:  does it make sense for a word like LBD (little black dress)  to be in the dictionary when blateration (blabber or chatter) is not?

So, from now on, on a weekly basis, we’re going to pick new “Save the Words” words and use them here on the blog.  We recommend you do the same.  Just think how impressed your peers will be when you use a word they’ve never heard before in conversation and you can say that you are single-handedly saving it from oblivion?

At the very least, click on over to the website.  The words literally beg you to choose them.  Seriously.  I’m not kidding.  They talk to you.  Try saying no to obstrigillate (to oppose, to resist) when it is yelling “pick me!”  Visiting this website is like going to a pound filled with puppies.  You try saying no.  I promise you won’t be able to resist.
