Rainbow Rubbish by Liz Jones

Have you ever been to the beach? What about a river? A lake? Chances are, the answer to at least one of these questions, if not all three, is yes. And while you were there, especially at the beach, did you happen to notice the unbelievable amount of trash, both on the beach, and in the water? And what did you think, when you saw the trash? If you’re like me, your first reaction was: what a shame. Our collective disregard for nature is outrageous.

Which of course, is a completely natural reaction. Lucky for us, Liz Jones of Betty Jo Designs saw more than just the trash: she saw a way to use the trash to make a creative statement. The old adage has never rung more true: one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Using trash she collected along beaches and rivers, Liz is making colorful art that packs a punchy message: she hopes her art “sent a little message about the problems with our disposable culture.”

As an artist, you have the ability to see the world through a creative lens. If it turns out that trash is not just trash, then you can create meaningful treasure out of practically anything. Just make sure to follow Betty Jo Designs’ lead and use as much color as possible in the process.
